What Is a Serrated Lock Washer?
A serrated lock washer (also called a toothed lock washer) is designed to prevent fasteners from loosening by biting into the contact surface and increasing friction.
Unlike spring washers, it does not rely on elasticity - it relies on mechanical grip.
How Serrated Lock Washers Actually Work
When tightened:
The teeth embed into the material surface
Friction between washer and joint increases
Micro-movement is restricted
This friction-based locking helps resist loosening caused by vibration
Important: When Serrated Washers Do NOT Work
This is where most suppliers stay silent.
Not recommended for:
High-strength bolts (≥ Grade 8.8)
Hardened steel surfaces
Critical structural connections
Reason:
The teeth cannot penetrate hard surfaces, making the locking effect unreliable
Surface Damage Consideration
Because the teeth bite into the material:
Coatings (paint, zinc) may be damaged
Corrosion risk may increase
