Advantages of Rivets

High Shear Strength

Rivets provide excellent resistance to shear forces, making them ideal for applications where parts experience lateral stress. This strength helps maintain structural integrity, especially in heavy-duty applications.

Vibration Resistance

Riveted joints remain stable under vibration, unlike some threaded fasteners that may loosen over time. This makes rivets particularly suitable for use in vehicles, machinery, and aerospace applications.

Versatility

Rivets are versatile fasteners that can be utilized with a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, and composites. This flexibility makes them a popular choice in various industries, from construction and automotive to electronics and aerospace.

Consistent Joint Quality

Rivets are known for providing consistent joint strength and appearance, resulting in a clean, uniform finish on both sides of the workpieces.

Types of Rivets

Solid Rivets

Solid rivets are the most storied and common type used. They are made from a solid piece of metal with a pre-formed, upset-forged head at one end, and an installation-formed head created to compress the pieced materials into a permanent composite. These are used in applications that require permanent, durable fastening, where both ends of the rivet are accessible.

Blind Rivets

Blind, or pop rivets, are a tubular type that can be installed from only one side of the material, making them ideal for situations where access to both sides of the workpiece is limited. This is achieved by means of a preinserted pulled-expander or mandrel which distorts the rivet on the non-accessible side to create a buck that, when fully formed, then breaks the head off the mandrel, completing the joint.

Split Rivets

Split or bifurcated rivets are designed with a split or forked tail. When installed, the tails are typically curled or folded outwards to form a tight hold clamping the material being fastened. These rivets are often used in applications where the rivet must grip soft materials or where a large surface area is required for the fastener.

Cherry Rivets

Cherry rivets are a subset type of blind or pop rivet that is particularly popular in the aerospace industry. They are designed for use in situations where higher strength and one-sided installation are required. Cherry rivets are made in various sizes and materials and can be installed using a simple, one-sided installation process, functionally identical to pop-rivets except the mandrel is typically of higher precision and enhances the formed-rivet strength and stiffness rather than being discarded in the forming.

Semi-Tubular Rivets

Semi-tubular rivets are solid rivets but with a partial hole in the center of the body, on the installation-formed end. This hole reduces the amount of material needed and allows low-force buck formation by rolling the tubular tail, which renders them somewhat lighter and low cost to install. The installation process for semi-tubular rivets is similar to that of solid rivets, but the design allows for easier deformation and a more consistent fastening process.

Drive Rivets

Drive rivets are installed using a hammer or a special driving tool. These rivets do not require a mandrel, and the installation process involves simply driving the rivet into place until it is securely fastened. Drive rivets are designed to form a strong bond when the body of the rivet is deformed during installation.

Fields of Application

Riveting is used in many industries as it provides an extremely reliable and durable connection. Typical fields of application include:

Aerospace

In aircraft, all connections must withstand extreme loads and vibrations, which is why riveting is frequently used.

Bridge construction

The high mechanical strength of riveted joints is utilized in load-bearing structures that require long service life and high safety standards.

Automotive industry

Riveted connections are used in vehicle production where high strength and corrosion resistance are required.

Mechanical engineering

In machines and equipment where precise and stable connections are critical, riveting is the preferred joining method.

The Rivet Installation Process

The rivet installation process follows these key steps:

Hole Preparation

Precisely sized holes are drilled through the materials to be joined.

Rivet Insertion

The rivet is placed into the aligned holes with its head flush against one surface.

Setting the Rivet

Using specialized tools, force is applied to deform the shaft, creating a second head on the opposite side that locks the materials together.

Inspection

The completed joint is examined to ensure proper installation and structural integrity.

FAQ

Q: How long is your delivery time?

A: It depends on your items and quantities. Usually, around 35 days for one 20 feet container.

Q: Do you provide samples? is it free or extra?

A: We’d like to provide free samples for standard fasteners, but clients need to pay the express charges.

Q: What is your payment term?

A: Generally, 30% T/T in advance , the balance against the draft copy of B/L.

Q: I need a customized fastener, but it’s not on your website. What do I do?

A: Please send us your request with detailed drawings or photos, then we will make the quotation for you accordingly.

Q: What is the material used to make rivets?

A: Rivets are commonly made from steel, copper, brass, aluminum, and stainless steel, with each material chosen based on strength, corrosion resistance, and application needs. For example, aluminum rivets are lightweight and resistant to rust, while stainless steel rivets offer superior strength and durability in harsh environments.

Q: What is a rivet tool called?

A: A rivet tool is called a rivet gun, also known as a rivet hammer or pneumatic hammer. Rivet guns come in manual, electric, and pneumatic versions, with pneumatic rivet guns being the most efficient for high-volume applications.

Q: Why use rivets instead of welding?

A: Unlike welding, riveting creates a joint that can flex slightly, making it more resistant to vibrations and fatigue. Riveting is also faster, requires no specialized training, and allows for the joining of dissimilar materials without heat distortion or structural weakening.

As one of the leading rivets manufacturers and suppliers in China, we warmly welcome you to wholesale bulk rivets in stock here and get pricelist from our factory. All customized products are with high quality and competitive price.
